Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management

What is JPRISM 2?


The J-PRISM II Project is set in 9 countries around the Pacific. Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Project objectives, achievements and activities are set individually in each country.

Output 1: Monitoring mechanism for solid waste management in line with Cleaner Pacific 2025 is strengthened.
Output 2: Regional cooperation is organized and promoted by utilizing regional human resource and sharing good practices in the region.
Output 3: Regional capacity of disaster waste management is strengthened.
Output 4: Practical and sustainable 3R+Return system is enhanced.

These are Regional Outputs. Vanuatu and other countries have their own national outputs based on the country’s priorities.

Overall Goal


Sustainable management of solid waste in the Pacific region is enhanced based on Pacific Regional Waste and Pollution Management Strategy 2016-2025 (Cleaner Pacific 2025)


Project Purpose


The human and institutional capacity base for sustainable Solid Waste Management in the Pacific Region is strengthened through the implementation of the “Cleaner Pacific 2025”

J-PRISM Roadmap

For Building the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Return network in the Pacific


  • Analysis of actual resource usage and recycling capacity
  • Strengthen recycling association and resource collection system in the region
  • Check and evaluate required tools, capacity, cost and benefit
  • Promote proper recycling and return utilizing regional facilities
