Au Bon Marche

Bon Marché is the largest retailer in Vanuatu with 6 supermarkets, a wholesale division and 4 service stations. We are supportive of measures to reduce waste, such as the plastic bag ban that came into force in 2018. We are very pleased to see the environmental benefits to not supplying shopping bags at our check outs and offering re-usable bags to purchase instead. In response to the increase in plastic mesh used for fruit and vegetables which was a consequence of the plastic bag ban, we introduced a system where our customers use our re-usable produce bags when in store and return them at the checkout. Our re-pack station no longer uses plastic trays and we are investigating how to transition from plastic to recycled paper at our butchery, fishmonger and delicatessen, even though we are aware there will be an increase in cost to us and our customers. Secondary packaging for most of our imports (90%) is in small sized cardboard boxes. Half of these are put out into the checkout area for customers to use for their shopping. The rest, mostly broken or damaged boxes, are taken to the landfill. A small amount of our imports arrive wrapped in pallet wrap, which again is taken to the landfill. Our kitchen and repack station generate green waste from cleaning and washing fruit and vegetables and our workshop for our fleet of vehicles generates waste oil, which are disposed of in the landfill. We are open to suggestions on how to reduce this waste and are dedicated to finding solutions to waste management for the benefit of our customers and the environment of Vanuatu.

VESS’s vision is to protect Vanuatu’s natural world and resources by using science to inform conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development. We hope to achieve this by reaching out to Ni-Vanuatu and visitors to interact with Vanuatu’s flora and fauna responsibly. We believe using science allows communities, the government and other stakeholders to make informed choices so we can all live harmoniously with our natural environment.

VESS has been conducting community litter cleanups since 2015 and campaigning for a cleaner Vanuatu for the people and the wildlife. VESS is the Vanuatu coordinator for the ICC. Data from our cleanups has been used to inform national policies such as the single-use-plastic bans.

Vanuatu Brewing Ltd

Vanuatu Brewing Limited, proud producer of Vanuatu’s locally brewed Tusker beer, is one of the a few companies in the Pacific Islands to have a “Return & Earn” policy to promote the re-using of its glass bottles.

By doing this it contributes not only to the preservation of the country’s environment but also to its economy. This re-usable policy has created a chain reaction, developing jobs in the community. The bottles are bought from the locals directly or through bottle collectors who then gather the bottles and sell them to Vanuatu Brewing Ltd, where they are then passed through the washer.
During its 30 years of existence, Vanuatu Brewing Limited has reused over 100,000,000 bottles of beer and sparkling water with a remarkable collection rate of 90% throughout Vanuatu’s 83 islands

Vanuatu Beverage Limited is proud manufacturer of “Vanuatu Water”, the only bottled spring water of Vanuatu, and “Splashe”, Vanuatu’s only locally made soft drinks since 1972. We also manufacture other drinks such as fruit juice, cordial, spirits and liqueurs. Thanks to recent investments, we were able to achieve quality standards and production volumes, which allows us to satisfy the local demand but also reach export markets.

Nevertheless, we are aware of the environmental impact of our manufactured goods in Vanuatu, and therefore, as part of our environmental and social responsibility policy, we are very active in finding waste management and recycling solutions to reduce our eco-footprint from the waste of our manufactured products. One of our main project, working with other VRWMA members, is the setting up of a national container deposit scheme which will resolve the littering issue of all beverage products and centralizing its waste for recycling purposes.

RecycleCorp

RecycleCorp (Vanuatu) is Vanuatu’s only dedicated recycling company. RecycleCorp was established by Andrew Hibgame in 2007. Operations are located in the capital Port Vila and in Luganville. The main activity of RecycleCorp is collecting, processing and exporting of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal. Used lead acid batteries and e-waste is also collected and exported. We have recently started a glass collection and the glass is crushed to sand to be used in construction. We took part in a pilot in June 2021 to export the first plastic bottles for recycling from Vanuatu.

RecycleCorp employs around 30 Ni-Vanuatu staff. Employees include skilled workers such as mechanics, machine operators, crane truck drivers and welders as well as labourers.
